Episode Summary
Synopsis
Desperate Times...
With DS12 surrounded by three Grey battleships, Admiral Nechayev orders the shields fortified. She notes that they are not without resources, but Commander Darwin suggests that with the fleet away, they don't stand a chance. Knapp then reminds them that not all the ships are gone. Nechayev asks him if he has a plan - Knapp says he'd better by the time he gets to the docking ring.
Meanwhile, the fleet is pulling away from the diversionary Grey fleet under fire. Commander Shelby orders Ensign Barrett to contact Commodore Terry on the USS Saratoga despite his orders for radio silence. The Commodore tells her that the fleet is going as fast as it can and still maintain its formation. Shelby tells him that unless they go faster, there will be nothing left of the fleet, but he'll have none of it - if they don't maintain their fields of fire, the smaller warships will take out the fleet off one ship at a time. He orders her to stay in formation.
The Excelsior is buffeted by the subspace shockwaves of multiple fold events as the Grey ships leapfrog ahead of them. The Excelsior continues fighting and tries to compensate for the waves, but the Grey keep jumping ahead of them. Commodore Terry opens a channel to the fleet. He tells them that the Grey fighters are acting as pathfinders for their larger ships. He turns command of the fleet over to Shelby and orders them to make for DS12 at best possible speed. The USS Saratoga (Terry's flagship), USS Independence, USS Olympus and the USS Akira will attempt to hold the Grey back to permit the rest of the fleet sufficient time to escape. Barrett reports that the Saratoga is taking heavy fire. When Shelby offers to have the Excelsior double back and help free them up, Terry tells her again to head for DS12 as fast as their impulse manifolds will take.
Meanwhile, the Grey destroy a New Orleans-class frigate. Then, another Grey warship clips the Olympus in a warp nacelle, sending it spinning. It is then caught full-on by another Grey weapon blast, completely destroying the ship. McFarland, who had served as the Olympus' Flight Control Officer before her posting to the Excelsior is shocked. Shelby is equally stunned, noting that her predecessor, Lieutenant Commander Jason Munoz, was in command of the vessel. Shelby, not having the time to mourn, orders the fleet to maintain full impulse for as long as possible.
Back at DS12, the station is being hit from all sides by the Grey battleships. The station begins to fire its phasers back at them and its shields are holding for the moment. Knapp tells Nechayev to keep routing weapons power to the shield grid. Darwin suggests that tactic will only buy them a matter of minutes. Nechayev tell Knapp to begin - he announces that he's launching the first wave. Suddenly, a small group of drones appears from DS12 and flies towards a Grey battleship, detonating against the vessel. Knapp then launches a second wave, ordering them to attack the most damaged ships. Nechayev orders Knapp back to Ops. Darwin wonders whether the Grey will continue their attack. Nechayev doesn't expect them to withdraw but notes that Knapp "bloodied their nose." The Grey hold their position just off the station.
Knapp tells Nechayev that they Grey know that their options are limited - they've held their few combat-capable vessels out of the fray. Darwin continues the line of thought, suggesting that the Grey will either expect them to attack, or for the drone attacks to continue. Nechayev notes that they would know that DS12 doesn't have enough antimatter for the drones to drive them off. Then Knapp, with a flash of inspiration, suggests that they could be mistaken.
...Lead to Desperate Measures
In Excelsior's sickbay, Kaz lays on a biobed. Henglaar begins to tell Illiana that he can keep him alive until they return to DS12. Illiana wonders if there will be a station to return to. When Henglaar begins to explain Kaz's condition, Illiana refuses to recognize him as her husband, as no amount of Grey mind-control would force him into betraying those who protected his wife and son and lead them into a trap. Illiana leaves sickbay, leaving Aris behind. Henglaar suggests that he not be too hard on either of his parents - Kaz has been badly used and could probably use his company. Henglaar then excuses himself to the bridge, as he is acting as First Officer.
Later, on the bridge, Shelby is clearly anxious, asking McFarland for their ETA to DS12 - they're still over four hours away. She then asks Barrett whether there's been any word from Commodore Terry or the rest of the fleet that remained with him - there has been none. Henglaar then tells Shelby is hurting the crew's morale, suggesting that she take a deep breath, calm down and take an hour's nap, as everyone else has had a break but her. Shelby notes that he didn't seem to have the same concerns when Captain Knapp exhibited similar behavior, questioning whether he thinks she can take it. Henglaar questions whether she wants to "lower the bar" to be just like Knapp. Shelby responds that might be more than she thought.
In a docking bay, Nechayev tells Knapp that the fleet could return at any time - she cautions him, preferring that he wait rather than taking any sort of rash action. Knapp responds that what he's proposing may be desperate, but not rash. He notes that they cannot wait for the fleet's return, as there may no longer be a fleet. He suggests that the Grey will resume their attack soon and DS12 cannot drive them off on their own. The key is in Kaz's fold-ship - he's been studying it and believes that he can use its fold drive to create a "pocket fold" that will trap the Grey in fold space. He then notes that there's risk in everything and suggests that there's nothing else to debate. Nechayev leaves after ordering the Captain to proceed.
Traya then appears from behind some crates, saying Knapp's not who she thought he would be. She wonders what he's done to get into trouble and then to get sent off in a ship on his own. When Knapp says that he didn't do anything, that hevolunteered, Traya reminds him that the Orions "volunteered" her for a lot of assignments that she wasn't supposed to come back from. She thinks that he's running away, just as he did with her mother. She then runs off, leaving Knapp with the fold-ship and his thoughts.
Meanwhile, in Excelsior's sickbay, Kaz tells Aris how he never realized that the Grey were controlling him - that it seemed so real. Aris then tells Kaz that he knew something wasn't right - and about the dreams he's been having. Kaz tells him that sometimes, dreams are only dreams. Kaz then admits responsibility for their present predicament and asks Aris to help him die. Aris thinks about this for a moment, then takes his father's hand and places it against his forehead.
Nechayev returns to the docking bay, telling Knapp that they work well together. Knapp reluctantly agrees, but notes that he won't be joining her for tea any time soon. He then suggests that if what he's about to attempt doesn't work, that she not wait, and attempt to break out from DS12 with whatever ships she can. He then asks her to take care of Traya should he not survive - she simply nods, then leaves Knapp to his mission.
The fold-ship leaves DS12, attracting the attention of the Grey, who begin to fire at it. Knapp begins to match his ship's fold drive harmonics to those of the Grey ships. Darwin tells him to back off, as he's too exposed. Knapp then initiates the fold drive.
Some time later, the fleet returns to DS12. There are no Grey ships to be seen, just a battered DS12. The entire bridge crew gets to their feet and stares at the screen, shocked.
