Military Background
Family Service
David is a second-generation "Army brat", having spent 17 of his first 18 years in Radcliff, Kentucky, which is a community located just outside of Fort Knox. The remaining year was spent overseas at the U.S. military base at Bad Kissingen in the Federal Republic of Germany, living with his parents.
His maternal grandparents both served in the military - his grandmother at the Pentagon through the Women's Army Corps (WAC) during World War II and his grandfather as a 22-year Army veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam Wars, earning a Bronze Star in the process. His mother was a 20-year Army veteran, having served as a Drill Instructor at Fort Jackson, South Carolina before transferring to the Michigan National Guard. She retired as a Sergeant First Class in 1996. His stepfather and maternal uncle also served in the military, the latter having performed a tour of duty in the Marine Corps Band.
Civil Air Patrol
David himself wore a uniform between 1986 and 1992, having served as a Cadet in the Civil Air Patrol, an Auxiliary of the United States Air Force. The CAP is tasked with search and rescue, various homeland security missions, facilitating aerospace education and promoting leadership development through its cadet program. During his service, David earned both the Billy Mitchell and Amelia Earhart Awards and completed the Cadet Program in 1990, attaining the rank of Cadet Lieutenant Colonel. These achievements are considered by the U.S. military services as being equivalent to being an Eagle Scout.
David was presented with a Commander's Commendation Award in 1991 and was named Kentucky Wing Communicator of the Year in 1992 for his years of service helping manage communications operations at over twenty search and rescue and disaster relief training missions over his career. In total, he earned 23 awards in his six years of service and he was the highest-ranked cadet in the Kentucky Wing upon his retirement. As a result of his service, he was offered both Army and Air Force ROTC scholarships, which he subsequently turned down in favor of scholarship offers that did not require a term of military service.
Educational Background
After having graduated as Valedictorian and President of the Senior Class at North Hardin High School, David attended Southwest Missouri State University (known now as Missouri State University-Springfield) on a full-ride Presidential Scholarship. He graduated from SMSU in 1996 with a Bachelors of Science degree in political science and public administration magna cum laude in the Honors College.
David subsequently attended the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities where he completed 16 hours of graduate work in economics, statistics and public finance. He left the Institute in early 1998 owing to extreme stress resulting from the death of his partner in 1995.
Professional Background
Best Buy Co., Inc.
David was hired as an employee of Best Buy Co., Inc. in 2001. He was hired as an Administrative Assistant for the Real Estate Department of the then-recently-acquired Musicland Division. He remained in that position until Best Buy sold Musicland to a private equity firm in 2003.
After overseeing the transfer of Musicland's real estate portfolio, David transferred to become a Business Systems Analyst, first for the company's Display Management department and eventually for its GNFR (goods not for resale) Systems team. He oversaw the day-to-day administration of a website responsible for most project management of fixture and electronics deployment projects for the company and spending about one-quarter of its annual capital expenditures, totaling nearly a quarter-billion U.S. dollars at the height of its use. He also eventually oversaw the day-to-day operations of two other systems and another internally-operated website.
David was a co-founder of Best Buy PRIDE, the GLBT employee group at Best Buy. Started prior to formal recognition by the company in late 2002, the group at the corporate headquarters grew into a major regional sponsor of GLBT causes during his tenure. It also spawned a number of similar, company-supported organizations within Best Buy's field operations across the United States.
David was laid-off from Best Buy as part of a corporate restructuring in late March 2009.
Nonprofit/GLBT Community Involvement
David was extremely active in the GLBT community from 1993 until 2009. He helped re-found the SMSU Gay and Lesbian Alliance in 1993, shortly after coming out of the closet. He served that organization for three years as its Treasurer.
Twin Cities Pride
David held three positions on the board of Twin Cities Pride. Prior to August 2008, he served as the organization's Fund Development Director between 1998 and 1999 and as its Vice President of Administration from 1999 until 2008. While in this role, a world-class IT infrastructure has been developed and the organization's budget and attendance at its events has nearly doubled. David assumed the Chairmanship of the organization's Board of Directors in August 2008, where he is overseeing its transition from an all-volunteer "working board" to one that has a volunteer policy board and a combination of paid and volunteer staff to handle day-to-day operations. He retired from this position in July 2009.
InterPride
David also served on the Board of Directors for InterPride, the international association of LGBT Pride organizers. He served beginning in 1999, when he became the organization's Parliamentarian. He served as a Vice President of Operations from 2004 until 2008, where he was responsible for overseeing both the organization's methods and standards, as well as operations in the north-central United States, British Isles, Australasia, South America and southeast Asia. He retired from this position at InterPride's Annual General Meeting held in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in October 2008, owing to an increase in his local Pride and paid-work commitments. He subsequently assumed a new role as an Alternate Regional Director for InterPride's Region Four, helping oversee operations in the north-central United States. He resigned from this position in July 2009, citing the organization's inability to follow its own rules, which he was a key architect of.
