The USS Potemkin
The USS Potemkin was an Excelsior-class starship that had a long history of service in Starfleet.
In 2361, the Potemkin attempted to make contact with the failed colony on the planet Turkana IV. They were warned that anyone transporting to the colony would be killed. (TNG - "Legacy")
During this same timeframe, the Potemkin was a posting of now-Captain William T. Riker prior to his assignment to the Enterprise-D as her Executive Officer. Riker led an away team to evacuate the science outpost on Nervala IV because of a dangerous energy distortion field covering the planet. It was not realized at the time that this distortion field caused the ship's transporter to malfunction, materializing a duplicate Riker on the planet's surface. The Potemkin left orbit, unknowingly abandoning the duplicate Riker. The original Riker was promoted to Lieutenant Commander after this rescue mission. However, his duplicate was discovered in 2369 by the Enterprise-D and subsequently began a new life as Thomas Riker and reassigned to the USS Gandhi. (TNG - "Second Chances")
In 2368, the Potemkin ferried Dr. Toby Russell, a neurogeneticist, to the Enterprise-D in order to help Lieutenant Worf recover from a severe spinal injury. (TNG - "Ethics")
During the Dominion War, the Potemkin was assigned to the Ninth Fleet, headquartered at the Federation starbase Deep Space Nine in orbit of Bajor.
She was later transferred to the 12th Fleet, charged with protecting the Briar Patch, headquartered at Deep Space 12 in orbit of Ba'ku.
The Potemkin was destroyed in early 2382 during a combined Tholian/Breen assault on Deep Space 12. Her warp core breached owing to the effects of a Breen-fired subspace charge and she was lost with all hands. ("Countermeasures")
