Operational History
Initial Assignment to Deep Space 12
In 2376, the Independence was assigned to Deep Space 12. During a patrol along the Tzenkethi border against pirate incursions, the Independence fought against Tzenkethi pirates respoinding to a colony distress call near the Briar Patch. During the battle, the pirates cited the Khitomer Accords, asking a neutral party to mediate, but it was stall tactic to gather reinforcements. Two of the attacking warships were destroyed. The remaining two were able to escape into the Briar Patch when then-Fleet Captain Jennifer Cole opted to answer another distress call from the Nelbado Colony. (ANG 1.01 - "Return to Duty" and HF 3.03 - "Heroes")
Later that year, the Independence was placed on standby when a plasma storm damaged DS12 and threatened Ba'ku. After the USS Angeles was damaged by the plasma storm, Commander Joseph Johns was ordered to take the Independence to Ba'ku and evacuate the planet. After the storm veered away, the Independence halted the evacuation and returned to the station. (ANG 1.02 - "A Little Night Music")
Commander Johns later took the Independence to Ba'ku to search for the missing Artim Ibanya. The Independence subsequently escorted a Breen Warship to Ba'ku to deliver Breen scientists to the planet. (ANG 1.03 - "Dreamers")
The Independence was later deployed, along with the Angeles, to assist the USS Olympus in dealing with a Borg cube. The assistance was unnecessary, as the cube had been destroyed by the time they arrived. (ANG 1.04 - "Q in the Dark" and HF 3.04 - "In Memory Of")
Encounter With the RMS Titanic
In 2377, the Independence lost many of her crew members during a prior rotation. Captain Ian Quincy Knapp placed the Independence under the temporary command of Commander Johns, who placed Lieutenant Commander Myra Elbrey as his First Officer and Science Officer, Lieutenant William Martinez as his tactical officer, and Ensign Andrew Barrett as his Flight Control Officer. The shuttlecraft of the Independence were off-loaded to DS12 for upgrades.
The Independence discovered a temporal anomaly at the probe's coordinates. An unknown vessel of Federation design fired on the Independence, which was damaged in the encounter. The Independence traveled back in time to early 20th century Earth to escape the vessel and arrived at the sinking of the RMS Titanic. Commander Johns and crew were able to determine that the sinking of the Titanic was the result of interference with the timeline. With the assistance of the Federation timeship Causality, they were able to save some of the passengers and assist in their repatriation in the 24th century. They subsequently destroyed the ship responsible for the interference through use of the Independence's auto-destruct sequence; this caused the temporal anomaly to collapse and the timeline to be restored, including the ship and her crew. (HF 1.04 - "Two Hours")
Combat against the Grey
In 2379, the Independence was a part of the Federation fleet sent to face the incoming Grey fleet. (HF 2.09 - "Worst Fears, Part 1") The Independence, the USS Akira, the USS Olympus, and the USS Saratoga stayed behind to delay the Grey long enough for the USS Excelsior to lead the rest of the fleet to Deep Space 12. (HF 3.01 - "Worst Fears, Part 2") The vessel played cat and mouse with the Grey fighters. Afterwards, the Independence went to DS12 to be repaired. (HF 3.03 - "Heroes")
The Mystery of the Tetrahedron Key
The Independence started to pick up the supply shipments and to Starbase 153. Commodore Ian Knapp and his daughter, Traya Knapp, went on the vessel as passengers to go to Browder IV for a little R&R. The Independence can only take them as far as Sector 415. The vessel picked up anti-matter at Starbase 153 for a delivery at DS12. The Independence went to the Browder System to investigate a raid by Tzenkethi pirates. The vessel fought against two pirate vessels, but the Independence had to let them go to respond to a distress call from the USS Redlands. The Independence went to the origin of the false signal in the Ishmar system and discovered a damaged Ferengi vessel in orbit of Ishmar V.
The vessel beamed the Ferengi survivors onto the Independence. The vessel traced the transmission to a Tzenkethi raider and battled the ship. The Independence disabled the raider and captured the crew. The vessel retrieved the shuttle, DuBois and met with the USS Antietam. The vessel went back to the supply runs. The next mission was for the Independence to go to the Tzenkethi home world on a diplomatic mission. (HF 3.03 - "Heroes" and HF 3.05 "Modus Operandi") Prior to his re-assignment to the Excelsior, McCabe studied the keys on the vessel. Lieutenant McCabe was re-assigned to the Excelsior by Commander Tolian Naros. (HF 3.05 "Modus Operandi")
Loss of the Independence
On Stardate 60423.8, the Independence was escorting transports through the Briar Patch when she came under attack from the Tholians. Under the orders of Rear Admiral Jennifer Cole, all of the Independence's shuttle and attack craft were launched in an attempt to counter the onslaught but to no avail. Cole ordered the ship abandoned, escaping with the bridge crew on the captain's yacht. The wreckage of the Independence was discovered by the USS Angelfire, during the subsequent search and rescue operation. (HF 7.04 - "Hearts and Minds")
