2377

Arrival at Deep Space 12

The Excelsior was launched in 2377 under the command of Captain Ian Quincy Knapp. The Excelsior was assigned many new recruits in hopes that Captain Knapp would help season them, much to his dismay. The Excelsior was assigned to Deep Space 12 to investigate Grey-related activities in the area. It also served as the sector flagship upon the departure of the USS Angeles for training duty. Upon her arrival, Lieutenant Commander Jason Munoz was assigned as the Acting First Officer. (HF 1.02 - "Enemy Unknown, Part 2")

The first mission of the Excelsior was to investigate the destruction of a colony ship in the Corinthius system. (HF 1.02 - "Enemy Unknown, Part 2") The Excelsior was sent to the Devron system in an effort to make first contact with the Grey. A Starfleet task force of a dozen starships were sent as back up to the Excelsior. The Excelsior was prepared to "play possum" in an effort to make contact and sent out a fake distress call to that end. A Grey battleship responded and sent over a boarding party, but the Grey footsoldier was captured. The Excelsior fought against the battleship with the task force. During the battle, the Excelsior was damaged and Captain Knapp was kidnapped by the Grey. Commander Munoz transferred command of the task force to Captain T'Kell. The Excelsior was subsequently able to retrieve Knapp and heavily damaged the battleship. The Excelsior led the task force back to DS12. (HF 1.03 - "Enemy Unknown, Part 3") In the battle's aftermath, the Excelsior took several weeks to be repaired. (HF 1.04 - "Two Hours")

Perihelion

Soon after the repairs were effected, the Excelsior met with the USS Excalibur to pick up Commander Elizabeth Shelby, the ship's new First Officer. The Excelsior was diverted to Sector 324 to investigate the disappearance of the USS Perihelion while en route to a conference on Risa. The Excelsior locked onto the transponder signal of the Perihelion and discovered the science vessel in orbit of a quantum singularity with an unknown vessel. The Excelsior began suffering systems failures and the crew were starting to hallucinate. Captain Knapp sent an away team over to the unknown vessel. The away team discovered that the vessel was from another dimension. It employed a quantum singularity drive which created a breach between their home dimension and our own, leading to the breakdowns and hallucinations experienced by the crews of the Excelsior and the ill-fated Perihelion The Excelsior was able to escape by self-destructing both the unknown vessel and the Perihelion, the latter having been sent to the other side of the singularity to help seal the breach. (HF 1.05 - "Perihelion")

Battle at a Tzenkethi Colony World

Towards the end of 2377, the Excelsior stopped a Tzenkethi vessel from forcing its way to the healing rings of Ba'ku using Wesley Crusher as a hostage. Subsequently, the Excelsior was sent to a Tzenkethi colony world under attack from a Grey battleship, responding to a distress call. Lefler and her engineering team were able to develop a neural neutralizer against the Grey's psionic attack. Crusher, who was assisting Lefler, devised a nanite weapon against the battleship. Upon arriving at the colony, the Excelsior was able to stop the Grey's psionic attack, but the nanites were not deployed in time to immediately disable the battleship. The Excelsior and the battleship engaged in battle until the nanites were able to be successfully deployed, after which the battleship was disabled and subsequently secured by elements of the Fifth Fleet. The Excelsior was also able to rescue some of the colonists. (HF 1.06 - "Echoes")

2378

Battle of Ba'ku

The Excelsior led a Federation fleet against an attacking Grey fleet under the command of Captain Knapp. The Excelsior was damaged during the fight. The Excelsior used protomatter bombs effectively in destroying a number of Grey warships. (HF 2.01 - "Refugees")

Testing a Dominion Weapon

The Excelsior was chosen by Admiral Jennifer Cole to test a new Dominion device to fight the Ethereals. Myra Elbrey tested the device against a Grey battleship successfully. Captain Knapp stumbled upon the Founder's attempt to ally with the Grey and he fired a phaser at the Founder. The phaser was only set to stun, but the Founder believed he was hit with a mortal shot and died. Knapp was placed into custody and the Excelsior returned to the station. (HF 2.03 - "Old Wound")

Finding Missing Crewmembers

Shortly after a rendezvous the USS Endeavour for crew rotation, the Excelsior was informed about the status of its missing runabout and went to its last known position. The Excelsior brought the runabout aboard for analysis. Subsequently, Captain Knapp was contacted by the Federation undercover agent, "Whiteknight", and the ship went to the location of Sha'Kev's ship. The Excelsior was able to rescue Lefler and Luko from the USS Maverick before its destruction; they were unable to retrieve the body of Lieutenant Toby Witczak, however. (HF 2.04 - "Great Starship Robbery")

The Encke Investigation

The Excelsior met with the USS Olympus to pick up Mission Specialist, Ensign Corey Aster to help in their mission to investigate the loss of the SS Encke. The Excelsior arrived at Osiris III and discovered the debris cloud of the Encke in orbit of the planet. The ship sent out a series of isolytic bursts in order to test the theory about the destruction of the Encke. This led to the discovery of four Tetrahedrons in orbit of the planet. The Excelsior had to leave the system after a Grey battleship attempted to tractor one of the tetrahedrons which led to the planet's destruction. The Excelsior met with the Endeavour in order to drop off Ensign Aster while en route to Deep Space 12. (HF 2.05 "Encke")

Alternate Timeline

When the original USS Excelsior fell through a temporal anomaly, it resulted an in altered history, where the Federation laid waste to the Klingon Empire in revenge for the assassination of the President of the United Federation of Planets. The Q, as punishment, led the Borg to the Federation, who then decimated both the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, after which only a handleful of ships remained. This fleet, under the overall command of Admiral Alynna Nechayev, was led by Captain John Edward Knapp, in command of the Galaxy III-class USS Excelsior.

The Excelsior was the last dreadnaught to be launched from the Rigel Shipyards before the Borg attacked the system. The Excelsior was refit to "battlestar" by the Romulans three years prior. The Excelsior had not been to a starbase in five years. The Excelsior encountered the temporally-displaced Excelsior from 2293. The Excelsior was assimilated while protecting the older Excelsior while it entered the anomaly to restore the timeline. (HF 2.02 - "Yesterday's Excelsior")
