Operational History
The Excalibur survived an attack by the Borg sometime prior to 2368. Several members of her crew were assimilated in the encounter. (VOY 6.02 - "Survival Instinct") In 2368, the Excalibur was undergoing a major refit at Starbase 234 when it was commandeered by Captain Jean-Luc Picard to serve in a Starfleet blockade of the Klingon-Romulan border during the Klingon Civil War. (TNG 5.01 - "Redemption II")
The Excalibur was the posting of both Robin Lefler and Elizabeth Shelby prior to their respective transfers to the Excelsior in 2377. While on the Excalibur, Lefler was assigned to the graveyard shift. (HF 1.03 - "Enemy Unknown, Part 3") Later in 2377, the Excalibur rendezvoused with the Excelsior to drop off then-Commander Shelby. (HF 1.05 - "Perihelion")
Since Shelby transferred to the Excelsior, she has sent numerous subpsace messages to the Excalibur. (HF 2.04 - "Great Starship Robbery")
This iteration of the Excalibur was destroyed sometime between 2377 and 2381, as by the time of the episode "Vigil" (HF 6.05), the new USS Excalibur (NCC-26517-A), a Galaxy-class starship, had been commissioned and Captain Shelby noted that Captain Calhoun had been on assignment for at least a year under Admiral Nechayev's orders.
Background Information
- The Excalibur is named after the mythical sword of King Arthur.
- At least two other Federation starships have borne the name Excalibur:
- A Constitution-class starship, registry NCC-1664, which was damaged beyond repair when the M-5 computer aboard the USS Enterprise fired a full-powered phaser strike at her during wargames. (TOS 2.24 - "The Ultimate Computer")
- The Galaxy-class successor to this vessel.
- The name Excalibur was also borne by an experimental British submarine in the mid-20th century.
