Operational History

Loss of the Defiant

In 2268, while in space claimed by the Tholian Assembly, the Defiant's crew began experiencing sensory distortions and, eventually, unexplained incidents of insanity. Eventually, the entire crew was consumed by this effect, leading to mutiny and their killing each other in violent combat.

Shortly thereafter, the USS Enterprise entered the same region to respond to the Defiant's distress call. Subsequent investigation revealed that Defiant was caught in a previously unknown phenomenon called a spatial interphase, which trapped the starship between dimensions and caused severe psychological stress for the crews of both ships. Owing to the Tholians entering the region in question during the Enterprise's investigation, the Defiant disappeared completely into the interphase.

Return of the Defiant

Defiant eventually re-emerged from interphase in 2379 and was discovered by Ferengi DaiMon Brok. He attempted to sell the starship to Excelsior's Captain Shelby as salvage. She convinced him to hand Defiant over in exchange for not bringing him up on a variety of charges.

The vessel was made spaceworthy by members of Excelsior's crew, led by then-Lieutenant Luko, who commanded a short cruise that brought Defiant into battle again with the Tholians, in an attempt to free the starship USS Penumbra from a Tholian trap. This encounter marked the beginning of a period of increased tension between the Federation and the Tholians. (HF 03.08 - "Voyage of the Defiant")

While she was damaged during the battle, Defiant was repaired again. At last report, she was docked at Deep Space 12.

Canon Notes

• The Star Trek Encyclopedia and other works list Defiant's registry number as NCC-1764. The 1975 mass market version of Bjo Trimble's Star Trek Concordance is the first time this registry for Defiant was made public, although rumor has it that it originated from a memo from D.C. Fontana at the time of the production of "The Tholian Web".

• In the Enterprise episode "In a Mirror, Darkly", Part I and part II, the NCC-1764 registry is seen clearly on the hull of the ship.
