The New USS Defiant
Originally commissioned as the USS São Paulo, Starfleet assigned this Defiant-class starship to Deep Space Nine after the loss of the original Defiant during the Second Battle of Chin'toka. The Chief of Starfleet Operations issued a special dispensation authorizing her commanding officer, Captain Benjamin Sisko, to rename her in honor of the original prototype vessel. He did so upon assuming command of the ship after a brief change-of-command ceremony on Stardate 52891.3.
The newly-christened Defiant acquitted herself well during the final action of the Dominion War, the Battle of Cardassia. She remained stationed at the Deep Space Nine after the conclusion of hostilities and the subsequent disappearance of Captain Sisko.
The Defiant entered the fray of the first Tholian/Breen assault on Deep Space 12 along with a fleet of nearly Dominion ships, which Captain Shelby of the USS Excelsior had requested, through Captain William T. Riker of the USS Titan, helping to turn the tide of that battle in favor of the Federation. ("Countermeasures")
