Operational History
The Antietam was formerly a "staff vessel" assigned to DS12, being assigned a command crew and officers when required. She served as a command vessel in various task groups during the multiple conflicts with the Grey, Breen and Tholians.
In the first Tholian-Breen attack on DS12, Commodore Ian Quincy Knapp commanded the Antietam while defending the station (HF 6.01 - "Countermeasures"). Knapp had also previously commanded the vessel in a reconnaissance mission in the McAllister Nebula. (HF 5.06 - "The Battle is Joined")
The ship was also assigned to assist the USS Aldrin, an Olympic-class starship whose terraforming mission had uncovered evidence of a mass grave of Bajorans on Radjic VI (HF 4.04 - "Grave Matters"). For this mission, its commanding officer was then-Commander James Darwin, who served as Executive Officer to Admiral Nechayev on Deep Space 12.
The Antietam, now under the command of Captain Darwin, is currently assigned to the task force searching for the rogue USS Helena. (HC 2.01 - "The Minstrel Boy")
Background Information
- The Antietam is named after the Battle of Antietam, an 1862 Civil War battle that is noted for being the single-bloodiest day in United States history.
- There have been three ships of note named Antietam, the first having entered service just after the conclusion of the Civil War. The second was an aircraft carrier launched shortly before the end of World War II, served in the Korean War and was decommissioned in the 1960's. The third is currently on active duty, a Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser serving with the USS John C. Stennis carrier group.
