From Hidden Frontier
A tricorder is a handheld sensing, data analysis, and data communications device, with many other specialized abilities which make it a valuable tool for crews aboard starships and space stations as well as on away missions. It is used by a number of spacefaring races in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants.
