Tribble

Tribbles (Polygeminus grex) are small, round, furry, non-intelligent lifeforms originating from Iota Geminorum IV. They are known for their prodigious reproductive rate, being born effectively pregnant and being able to increase its numbers exponentially through asexual reproduction. The average tribble can bear a litter of ten tribbles every twelve hours if fed. They emit cooing sounds when touched, which have a tranquilizing effect on the Human nervous system. Conversely, they will screech when in the presence of a Klingon, who do not care for the creatures, either.
The Klingon Empire launched a successful mission to destroy the species - until it was reintroduced by the crew of the USS Defiant in 2373. (DS9 - "Trials and Tribble-ations") The Romulan Star Empire banned tribbles as an ecological threat, but they are traded on the black market in the Empire, as they are considered to be a delicacy. ("Star Trek: Operation Beta Shield").
