A tractor beam is an attenuated linear graviton beam used by starships and space stations to control the movement of external objects. The beam places spatial stresses on the object allowing the ship or station using the tractor beam to hold the object in a fixed location, tow it or alter its position and/or trajectory. Tractor beams can also be set to repel objects.

By the 29th century, a portable hand-held version will be invented. Lightoller used one to pull an iceberg into the RMS Titanic's path. Commander Joseph Johns from the 24th century discovered such a device aboard the Titanic. (HF 1.04 - "Two Hours")
