The Grey Confederacy is still largely a mystery to the Federation. The Grey are led by the telepathic Ethereals, who employ footsoldiers to do their dirty work, frustrating Starfleet's attempt to explore the Briar Patch and solve the mysteries of the tetrahedrons. Grey Battleships use biomechanical hull plating. It was theorized by Rayvan that the metaphasic particles found within both the Briar Patch and the McAllister Nebula could enhance the strength of their plating. (HF102, "Enemy Unknown, Part 2")
