Early Life and Career
The second child of three for her parents bonding group, Leransilia sh'Talath knew she was destined for great things from early on in her life. But what eventually drove her from her family was the fact she believed that future resided away from Andor, not within it. As a member of the shen gender, her genetic contribution to the four-gender mating cycle was critically important, and so sh'Talath allowed herself to be placed into a mating group, although she never felt any connection to them. She never grew to care for them, in fact she resented them, feeling nothing but the sense of obligation to carry out her genetic duty for the greater Andorian good.
But eventually, she realised she could no longer live the lie her life had become, and fled Andor, leaving her life there behind - this placed her effectively in exile, labelled a pariah among her people for daring to reject tradition and abandon the shelthreth - the ritual mating ceremony where genetic material from all four genders is used to create a new life. The shen, the start of the process, carried the most importantly needed material, and her abandonment of her shelthreth was viewed as a great travesty, resulting in her being disowned by her family and bonding group.
Not looking back, she applied to Starfleet Academy in 2357, her academic record speaking for itself, despite her past, and she was soon accepted. Graduating, she was assigned as a junior security officer on Starbase 275, a far-flung starbase on the outer reaches of Federation space, that tested her abilities quickly, resulting in a fast promotion to Lieutenant, junior grade the following year. She quickly made a name for herself, which prompted her decision to drop the “sh’” prefix from her surname, instead going simply as Talath. She enjoyed going by this name so much, that she prefers to be addressed in this manner most of the time - only her closest friends and colleagues ever call her Leransilia.
After serving on the starbase for a total of 2 years, she was transferred to the position of Assistant Chief of Security on the Excelsior-class USS Nogura, which also allowed her to man the bridge Tactical station on several shifts. This again tested her abilities, and her commanding officers soon realised her own command potential as well, promoting her to full Lieutenant, and assigning her various tasks outside of her normal duties, which she continued to perform in admirable style. She eventually succeeded to the position of Chief of Security on the Nogura, which she held for a further 2 years, before being promoted to Lt. Commander and offered the Second Officer position on the Starship Melbourne, a move which was abruptly demolished when the ship was destroyed at Wolf 359, before she could join it.
Instead, she took an assignment alongside other veterans helping to reconstruct the fleet in record time. This allowed her to earn her third pip, and the position of Second Officer on the USS Lexington, a Nebula-class vessel that carried out a long-term science mission for several years. She eventually became First Officer of that vessel, before assuming command of the Steamrunner-class USS Hiroshima, after its refit from damage sustained in the Borg attack on Sector 001.
She commanded the Hiroshima for several years, even taking onboard the former Romulan officer, S’Ceris. Talath was a strong proponent for his eventual commissioning as a Starfleet Officer, perhaps identifying with the fact that he too had left behind everything he knew for what he felt he had to do. This connection to S’Ceris has also allowed Talath something akin to a comrade in arms, since her biological family no longer had any contact. This has caused some issues in later life, when Talath discovered her younger sister had not only fulfilled her obligations in the shelthreth, but also joined in Starfleet as well. Talath was not at all happy to find out her sister’s career had moved at a faster pace then her own, and was also decorated just as much as Talath was, if not more. Her sister commands the Intrepid-class USS Fearless.
When Walter Emick retired, Talath willingly left the Hiroshima to the command of her former Executive Officer, and assumed command of the USS Intrepid, the first ship of it’s class, larger and with more mission scope then the Hiroshima, which provided more of a challenge, as well as brought her (in her own eyes) level with her sister. The ship though came to grow on her, and with its past endeavours and the fact it was the first of its class, she has come to recognise its special place in history.
The Intrepid Missions
Talath commanded the Intrepid for less then a year, after succeeding Walter Emick, although she had made her mark, by assigning S'Ceris to the ship, and making her dissatisfaction with Hunter abundantly clear to everyone.
Family and Personal Life
Talath had abandoned her family on Andor, and been severed from her ties there, by not completing her mating ritual, instead fleeing it. She had a sister, who has also joined Starfleet, and earned command of her own ship, the Fearless. Talath felt like she must do better, since she had given up everything to join Starfleet in the first place... She also had a enjoyment of piloting, a skill she leart on the Nogura, wanting to do more then be an Assistant Chief of Security, although she did occassionally put her own safety at risk since she enjoyed flying older, less well-maintained ships. She felt there is nothing like that kind of "edge-of-the-seat" flying.
Relationships
A decorated, but by the book combat officer, Talath was not afraid to voice her dissatisfaction with Commander Hunter's performance as her First Officer. Finding him inefficient and argumentative, she was planning to have him replaced once the present mission was completed.
Talath was largely responsible for S'Ceris current status with Starfleet. She brought him with her when she took command of the Intrepid and he is her most trusted confidant. They wee both exiles of their homeworlds, which was a major contributor to Talath taking S'Ceris under her wing, so to speak.
Death
It was Talath's enjoyment of flying less-then-perfect-working-order vessels that ultimately lead to her death, in 2382. While piloting an old Federation scoutship that had been relegated to a cargo shuttle for the Chiron Colonial Convoy, the helm controls locked up, becoming unresponsive. The ship entered the atmosphere of Chiron IV and was on a direct course for the recently established settlement, and would have destroyed the area if it had been allowed to crash. The crew were unable to evacuate due to hull ionisation caused by the vessel's transit into the planet's atmosphere. Commander Hunter, in command of Intrepid while Talath delivered supplies, gave the order to destroy the small ship, with its crew still aboard, resulting in their deaths.
