Some pages are protected because they are "for official use only" by sysops and Hidden Frontier staff.

In some cases where I'm considering whether a particular article submission should remain (i.e., whether or not the article is within the scope of the HF encyclopedia), I'll temporarily protect the page in order to keep further writing from being added until I'm satisfied that the article belongs in the HF encyclopedia.
