Silent running
From Hidden Frontier
Silent running is a condition of reduced emissions aboard a Federation starship. The closest thing to a cloaking device that Starfleet has, only active sensor scans can readily detect a ship in this mode.
[edit]
Actions Taken During Silent Running
- All communications systems that are wireless are immediately locked down
- Active scans of any kind must be cleared through the operations manager and CO on duty
- All waste emissions of any kind (i.e., impulse, warp, and gas/solid waste disposal) are logged and only emergency emissions, such as plasma venting or a warp core dump, can be performed without the explict permission of the captain of the vessel.
- Power use is minimized, with all outer hull lamps being reduced, or extinguished except where absolutely nessecary for ship operations.

Instances of Silent Running
- The USS Independence was rigged for silent running in the episode "Heroes," while investigating alleged Tzenkethi pirate attacks, then being diverted by a faked distress call, supposedly from the USS Redlands.
- Commodore Ian Quincy Knapp had the USS Antietam rigged for silent running in "The Battle is Joined" while on a reconnaissance mission in the McAllister Nebula, observing Tholian and Breen efforts to locate tetrahedrons there.
