QuickTime
From Hidden Frontier
The prevalent form of media that the show uses, Apple's QuickTime is the world standard for easy distribution of media across multiple platforms.
Reasons for Use
Hidden Frontier uses QuickTime because it's the easiest, most compatible, and least time consuming method of getting episodes out on the web. Often, discussion has been made as to why we do not utilize other, "lossless" formats, or compression types that make the episodes have potentially higher quality. The answer for this is the sheer amount of other codecs that tend to be unfriendly and very proprietary to one platform or another make it impossible for us to produce an episode in DivX or another format that is as universally compatible as QuickTime.
Alternatives
Some people don't like QuickTime, so there are some alternatives, such as:
- VLC Media Player
- VLC is an open-source media player that works on many platforms.
