Prime Directive

The Prime Directive (also known as Starfleet General Order 1) is the most important general order in Starfleet. Violation of the Directive is generally considered a serious offense unless sufficient justification can be made for the breach during a court-martial or to a Board of Inquiry.
The Directive states that members of Starfleet are not to interfere in the internal affairs of another species, especially the natural development of pre-warp civilizations, either by direct intervention, or technological revelation.
