Phasers are the most common and standard weapon in the arsenal of Starfleet and several other spacefaring powers. Coming in both hand-held and ship- and installation-mounted versions, phasers fire nadion particle beams that can be tuned in a wide range from "stunning" of life forms up to the destruction of matter and damaging of shields.

In 2378, Captain Ian Quincy Knapp's phaser setting (setting 3, heavy stun) was cited a key indicator that he did not kill the Founder. (HF 2.03 - "Old Wound")
