A naval rate. Petty Officer refers to a junior non-commissioned officer enlisted into Starfleet service without attending Starfleet Academy (rather attending the Starfleet Academy Enlisted Program) and going the route of becoming an officer. This position is higher than the Crewman designation and is directly subordinate to Chief Petty Officer.

There are three grades of Petty Officers; from lowest to highest:

  • Petty Officer, 3rd Class
  • Petty Officer, 2nd Class
  • Petty Officer, 1st Class

A Starfleet rank, this is denoted by a square embroidered logo on the color of the uniform with one, two, or three chevrons to denote grade.
