Lieutenant Pergium is a Starfleet xenogeologist. He was the first Starfleet officer that had ever been inside a tetrahedron.
Pergium is a Horta, a silicon-based lifeform from Janus VI uniquely capable of exploration in environments to which humanoids are ill-suited. He chose to be named after the mineral mined by the Federation on his homeworld, reasoning that pergium's value to the Federation meant he would be accepted by off-worlders.
As a nonverbal sentient, Pergium requires a telepathic interpreter to communicate with others. Lieutenant Milo Surgant was assigned to him by Starfleet for this purpose.
Starfleet Career
While on temporary assignment to the Grey Research Facility, Pergium successfully penetrated the defenses of the tetrahedron discovered by Starfleet on the ocean floor of the planet Ba'ku. His mission was sabotaged by the now-rogue Surgant, stranding him inside the ancient artifact as its defenses reacted to Pergium's entry. A resourceful officer, Pergium used his knowledge of the bees' dancing to transmit information to the runabout waiting outside the tetrahedron. The Horta somehow managed to escape, retrieving valuable data about the inner workings of the powerful artifact, including the discovery of a trace of an Omega molecule. Pergium appeared to have suffered some injuries in the ordeal, but recovered under Doctor Henglaar's care. (HF 6.02 - "Dancing in the Dark")
Pergium later led a strike team during the Battle of Tren'La that penetrated and disabled a tetrahedron used by Siroc and the Tholians as a weapon against the Federation-Klingon-Romulan-Cardassian alliance. (HF 6.06 - "Her Battle Lanterns Lit")
Personal History
While at Starfleet Academy Pergium developed an interest in the way other nonverbal species communicate, and this has become one of his hobbies. He particularly enjoys studying the communication of non-sentient, nonverbal species, like Earth’s honeybees. Pergium is also known for his singular sense of humor.
