Dr. Vaughan has an excellent bedside manner, even when it comes to a difficult patient such as Subcommander T'Lorra. He is the only one aboard Odyssey who can help her with a painful optical implant and he uses this need as a starting point to bond with her. He might be T'Lorra's only friend.
His medical expertise can only go so far, however, as equipment limits and scant resources oftentimes make miraculous Starfleet medicine impossible. Two notable deaths include Commander Stephen Conner and Lt. J.G. Shanaar.
The restrictions imposed on Vaughan due to being stranded in Andromeda have forced him to improvise, a skill he excels at. He successfully conspired with Lt. Stadi to rescue Ro Nevin from the clutches of Tybiss Mallim. This, after fooling Tybiss and T'Lorra into thinking that Nevin suffered from a rare Bajoran ailment known as Qwyfull's Malady. He did this in order to secure access to Ro Nevin, a crucial step in breaking him out of his cell.
