Operation Beta Shield (military operation)

Operation Beta Shield is the joint military operation initiated in late 2384 to secure the Beta Quadrant, specifically space controlled by the Romulan Star Empire, against further incursion by the Archein Empire.
The operation was initially a tri-partite alliance amongst the United Federation of Planets, the Klingon Empire and the Romulan Star Empire. The Federation was initially assigned the defense of the Zeta Voltanis system. The Klingon Empire was assigned the defense of the Neman Dray system. The Romulans established their defenses at the Kovalis system.
The Federation and the Klingons were expelled from Romulan space after the capture and interrogation of Captain Daniel John Hunter and Lieutenant S'Ceris of the USS Intrepid and Section 31 operative Klingon General Korg. It was only through the intervention of Federation President Se'Fron, in discussions with both then-Proconsul Yeshva and the Romulan Senate, that Starfleet forces were permitted to return to Romulan space to resume the operation. The Klingons, owing to Korg's participation in events on Romulus, continued to be excluded. This exclusion concerned the operational commander of Operation Beta Shield, Commodore Elizabeth Shelby, as it would strain the available forces available to repel any Archein attack. President Se'Fron was killed while returning to his transport, Starfleet One, when his diplomatic module exploded. (Star Trek: Operation Beta Shield)
Commodore Shelby's concerns regarding the available forces to repel an Archein invasion continued into the administration of Federation President Karah Vindenpawl of Vrijheid IV. By this time, the forces employed in the operation had been broken up into four squadrons. They could effectively serve as a picket line, but would not be able to be supported sufficiently by Starbase 395 should hostilities break out. This concern regarding the length of the supply lines to the fleet prompted President Vindenpawl to parlay with Romulan Praetor Yeshva to permit the construction of a starbase within Romulan space to better supply and support the operation.
