The Nova-class is one of Starfleet's most advanced scientific vessels, emerging as a replacement for its predecessor, the Oberth-class, during the late 2360's.

Class Specifications

Designed as a science and scout vessel, the Nova-class is used for short-term planetary research and analysis after a region had been surveyed by larger explorer-type vessels. It was not designed for long-range tactical missions. It typically carries a crew compliment of 80.

The Nova-class has a design similar to that of an Intrepid-class starship, though half the size. It consists of a saucer section with a curved triangular shape. The secondary hull is directly attached to the underside of the saucer with two warp nacelles. Unlike some starship designs, the Nova-class only features one impulse drive, located at the aft end of Deck 2 aligned center to the ship. The class has a top speed of Warp 8.

Though Nova's are science vessels, they have an assortment of weaponry, allowing the vessel to handle many threats on its own. It was equipped with eleven strategically-placed phaser arrays: eight on the saucer and three on the secondary hull, two forward-facing photon torpedo launchers at the bow of the saucer opposite of the secondary deflector, and one aft-facing launcher.

Class History

The following are notable instances in which Nova-class starships participated:

• In 2377, a Nova-class vessel was a part of the Starfleet task force sent to the Devron system. (HF 1.03 - "Enemy Unknown, Part 3")
• In an alternate time line, a Nova-class vessel was a part of the ragtag fleet. The vessel fought in battle against a pair of Borg Triangles so that a time displaced USS Excelsior can return to the year, 2293. (HF 2.02 - "Yesterday's Excelsior")
