Became the Chief Helm Officer in 2377 when assigned to the Excelsior. Originally assigned to Alpha Shift, along with the rest of the command staff, she eventually started taking on unpopular duty shifts, allowing the more junior helm officers time with the command staff. During Ian Knapp's search for his daughter, Traya, McFarland was on overdue leave, accumulated by taking on the more unpopular beta and gamma shifts, and readily agreed to lend her skills in the hunt. During this time, Knapp figured out Jenna was secretly part of Starfleet Intelligence, something she did not confirm until they returned to DS12 when their search proved fruitless. There, it was revealed, she had enough security clearence to enter the 2nd Grey Research Facility, as well as having been promoted to Commander at some point. She officially returned from leave and assumed her rightful rank and assisted in the defence od DS12 from Tholian/Breen forces by piloting the Starfleet/Grey hybrid. When the hybrid began operating by itself, McFarland tried to bypass the systems, and was severely injured by an eletrical overload. After the crew of the hybrid were rescued, she quickly recovered.
