Personal History

Martinez, a human, is a gifted leader with a keen tactical mind. Driven by a desire to excel, he was tapped by Starfleet as a leader since his days at Starfleet Academy. He has always felt very deeply the loss of colleagues and personnel under his command. After the destruction of the original Grey Research Facility, he appears to have channeled his "survivor's guilt" into his work, leading his staff in a single-minded, almost obsessive effort to make up for lost time to catch up with the Tholians' own efforts to master Grey technology and the powerful tetrahedrons.

While serving on the Excelsior, Martinez enjoyed playing poker with his fellow crewmates. (HF 1.05 - "Perihelion")

Starfleet Career

Aboard the USS Excelsior

2377

Lieutenant Martinez was assigned the Excelsior as the ship's TAC/SEC Officer. (HF 1.02 - "Enemy Unknown, Part 2") He was present at the Battle of Devron. (HF 1.03 - "Enemy Unknown, Part 3")

Martinez was temporarily assigned the USS Independence as her TAC/SEC. He went back in time to 1912 with the Independence because of the temporal anomaly. He was killed when the Independence self-destructed to keep the rogue Federation timeship from killing some of the survivors of the RMS Titanic. In the restored timeline, he reported that the anomaly disappeared. (HF 1.04 - "Two Hours")

During the battle at a Tzenkethi colony world against a Grey battleship, Captain Ian Quincy Knapp reminded Martinez to remember the crew of the USS Katana when firing the phasers. (HF 1.06 - "Echoes")

2378

Martinez led the investigation into the death of a Founder, when he was discovered dead at the feet of Captain Knapp. He was frustrated when an informal tribunal was organized before his investigation was complete. During the tribunal, he requested to finish the investigation before the tribunal made their finding. He enlisted the help of Lieutenant Toby Witczak to figure out the operation of the Dominion device. Owing to their efforts, it was determined that the Founder's death owed to "a misadventure". (HF 2.03 - "Old Wound") He transferred off of the Excelsior and he was assigned to a Quantum Slipstream drive research team. (HF 2.04 - "Great Starship Robbery")

Grey Research Facility

In mid-2378, Martinez accepted a promotion to Lieutenant Commander and transfer to the top-secret Grey Research Facility. He and small contingent of research personnel were on an Away Mission when the research station was attacked and destroyed by Orion pirates in league with Siroc and the Tholians. ("Hell's Gate, Part 1")

New Grey Research Facility

Starfleet's Grey research was stalled, and the connection between the Grey and the powerful tetrahedrons discovered by the Excelsior raised the stakes for the Federation's security. Martinez accepted a promotion to Commander to lead the renewed research effort at the new Grey Research Facility. He works with Commander Tolian Naros, Excelsior‘s first officer, to retrieve field data to assist in the research, as well as taking advantage of theories of and new discoveries by the ship's crew. ("Dancing in the Dark")

Alternate Timeline

When the original USS Excelsior fell through a temporal anomaly, it resulted an in altered history, where the Federation laid waste to the Klingon Empire in revenge for the assassination of the President of the United Federation of Planets. The Q, as punishment, led the Borg to the Federation, who then decimated both the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, after which only a handful of ships remained. Martinez was assimilated by the Borg. (HF 2.02 - "Yesterday's Excelsior")

Production Notes

Anthony Diaz left Hidden Frontier‘s principal cast to attend business school, where he completed his MBA in 2004. His character was replaced with the character of Lieutenant Luko (Terence Schoshinksi). Once he completed his degree he became available again to appear on the series as a recurring character in Season 6.
