Lieutenant Mark Abney (Rob Caves) served as helmsman aboard the USS Independence. He also served at the helm aboard the USS Devonshire under the command of Captain Ian Knapp, where he was nearly fatally wounded in an attack by a Dominion vessel during the Battle of Lapolis.
He is the cousin of Meredith Abney, a doctor aboard the USS Excelsior.
