Maquis
From Hidden Frontier
The Maquis were a group of former Federation resistance fighters who operated within the Cardassian Demilitarized Zone in the 2370's.
After the treaty between the Federation and Cardassia was signed in 2370, the DMZ was created, puting a number of Federation colonies, such as Dorvan V, found themselves within Cardassian territory, and a number of Cardassian colonies were now in Federation space. The colonists refused to leave, and an agreement was reached whereby the colonists could remain under the governance of the group whose territory they were in (TNG "Journey's End"). After a while, though, hostilities broke out between the respective colonies. The Federation colonists named themselves "The Maquis" after a French resistance cell during Earth's World War II. Sympathy amongst Starfleet officers was very high towards the Maquis, and a number of them defected to their cause, including Lieutenant Commander Calvin Hudson, Deep Space 9 Security Officer Michael Eddington, the transporter duplicate of the USS Titan's Captain William Riker named Thomas Riker, and the sister of LT Ro Nevin, Ro Laren.
In 2373, the Cardassians signed a treaty admitting themselves into the Dominion. The Cardassian leader Gul Dukat led a massive assault on the Maquis assets within Cardassian space, effectively eliminating the group (DS9 "By Inferno's Light," "Blaze of Glory," VOY "Hunters"). Small cells still remained, and a small crew from a lost Maquis ship was eventually returned to the Alpha Quadrant on board the USS Voyager.
