Ensign Kristen Laws (Heather Ashleigh) is a Terran member of Starfleet who was assigned to the USS Odyssey in 2384 as a member of the security team. She was able to survive the disastrous 'Iliad Mission', and continues to serve as a security officer while the ship is stranded in the Andromeda Galaxy.
Personal History
Laws grew up in Elk Grove, CA[1] as the youngest of two children. Her brother, Keith, died in an orbital skydiving accident in 2377. His death led to the dissolution of her parents' marriage and drove her to take more risks with her own life. She joined Starfleet despite her family's protests.
Starfleet Career
Starfleet Academy
Regarded as an above average student who nonetheless did little to distinguish herself during her time at the Academy. She received a Sharp Shooters' grade in her graduating phaser range performance.
USS Odyssey
Her sharp wit and ability to perform under pressure has made her one of Lt. Stadi's favorite security officers.
Production Notes
- Was not originally written into the script for Vile Gods, but when a similar speaking role was not filled, Laws immediately replaced the other character.
- The original pitch for The Lotus Eaters featured a depressed Ensign Laws, whose suicidal tendencies would ultimately lead to Ro Nevin's rescue. This approach was abandoned when the story changed to an environmental allegory. The Laws surname refers to the belief by some that suicide violates "natural laws."
