Captain Kira Nerys (played by Mona Eadington) became the commander of space station Deep Space 9 after Captain Benjamin Sisko was lost fighting a Pagh Wraith possesed Gul Dukat.

Personal History
Kira Nerys was born in the Dakur Province of Bajor. She spent most of her life in a Bajoran refugee camp with her father, Kira Taban, and her brothers Reon and Pohl. Her mother, Meru, was taken to Terok Nor when she was only three to become a "comfort woman" for the Cardassian soldiers. By the time she was 15, Kira had joined the Shakaar resistance cell, fighting for the liberation of Bajor.
Starfleet Career
After the Cardassians left Bajor in 2369, Kira Nerys was granted a commission as a Major in the Bajoran Militia, where she was assigned as the First Officer and Bajoran Liason on Terok Nor, now Deep Space 9. In 2375, she was promoted to the rank of Colonel, and temporarily took command of DS9 while Captain Sisco was away on leave on Earth. During this time, she confronted Senator Cretak over the Romulan's suspected use of a Bajoran moon for a weapons depot (DS9 "Shadows and Symbols"). Later that year, she was granted a field commission in Starfleet as a Commander in order to help Legate Damar lead the Cardassian resistance against the Dominion (DS9 "When it Rains..."). She returned to the Bajoran Militia after the mission and took command of DS9 when Captain Sisko failed to return from fighting Gul Dukat in the Fire Caves of Bajor (DS9 "What You Leave Behind"). A few years later, Bajor was officially admitted into the Federation, and the Bajoran Militia was integrated into Starfleet. Kira was given a commission as a Captain in Starfleet. In 2382, Captain Kira led a Dominion battle fleet aboard the USS Defiant to help defend Deep Space 12 from a combined Breen and Grey attack (HF "Countermeasures").
