Starfleet Career

Starfleet Academy and Early Career

McFarland attended Starfleet Academy at the same time as Corey Aster, Andrew Barrett, Marla Durkos, Matt McCabe, Brad Rawlins, and Ro Nevin. While attending the Academy, she placed gagh in Boothby's fish pond and she placed a jumja stick on Admiral Jellico's seat.

She subsequently served as a Flight Control Officer for then-Lieutenant Jason Munoz's command certification cruise aboard the USS Olympus. (ANG 1.04 - "Q in the Dark" and HF 3.04 - "In Memory Of"). She remained on the Olympus after the completion of that mission.

USS Excelsior

In 2377, Ensign McFarland was asked to transfer to the Excelsior by Commander Joseph Johns as a Flight Control Officer. In so doing, she rejoined some of her Academy classmates. (HF 1.02 - "Enemy Unknown, Part 2")

In 2378, she helped cheer up Lieutenant William Martinez during his investigation of the death of a Founder aboard the Excelsior. (HF 2.03 - "Old Wound") When the Excelsior was heavily damaged in two attacks by Grey fighters, McFarland was placed in command of the bridge after Lieutenant Luko brought a seriously injured, Commander Shelby to sickbay. (HF 2.07 - "Fire In The Heart")

In 2379, she enjoyed Lieutenant Luko's Poindexter Program and she told Lieutenant Commander Robin Lefler. (HF 3.04 - "In Memory Of")

Originally assigned to Alpha Shift, along with the rest of the command staff, she eventually started taking on unpopular duty shifts, allowing the more junior helm officers time with the command staff.

During Ian Knapp's search for his daughter, Traya, McFarland was on overdue leave, accumulated by taking on the more unpopular beta and gamma shifts, and readily agreed to lend her skills in the hunt. During this time, Knapp figured out Jenna was secretly part of Starfleet Intelligence, something she did not confirm until they returned to DS12 when their search proved fruitless. There, it was revealed, she had enough security clearence to enter the 2nd Grey Research Facility, as well as having been promoted to Commander at some point. She officially returned from leave and assumed her rightful rank and assisted in the defence od DS12 from Tholian/Breen forces by piloting the Starfleet/Grey hybrid. When the hybrid began operating by itself, McFarland tried to bypass the systems, and was severely injured by an eletrical overload. After the crew of the hybrid were rescued, she quickly recovered.

Alternate Timeline

When the original USS Excelsior fell through a temporal anomaly, it resulted an in altered history, where the Federation laid waste to the Klingon Empire in revenge for the assassination of the Federation President. The Q, as punishment, led the Federation to the Borg, who then decimated both the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, after which only a handleful of ships remained. Ensign McFarland was originally assigned to the Excelsior until she was transferred to Admiral Alynna Nechayev's staff as the ambassador to the Son'a. She was assimilated by the Borg, when the Excelsior was heavily damaged in battle. (HF 2.02 - "Yesterday's Excelsior")
