USS Angeles

In 2376, as an Ensign, James served as a Flight Control Officer aboard the USS Angeles. (ANG 1.01 - "Return to Duty")

Deep Space 12

As the Angeles was assigned to Deep Space 12, he also performed duties aboard that station, being assigned to various survey missions on Ba'ku amongst other duties.

By 2378, James had been promoted to Lieutenant Commander and served as the Chief of Station Operations, reporting to both former Rear Admiral Ian Knapp, as Commanding Officer of the starbase and Admiral Alynna Nechayev, as commander of the sector. He would also act as First Officer to Nechayev as well. (HF 2.01 - "Refugees")

Owing to his superior service in this capacity, he was promoted to Commander by 2380.

USS Antietam

During his tenure at Deep Space 12, James also commanded the Antietam on a variety of assignments as well, or served as a member of her command crew. After the conclusion of the Tholian-Breen conflict in 2383, Darwin was promoted to Captain and given command of the Antietam, which continued to be assigned to Deep Space 12.

The Antietam became part of the task force searching for the rogue starship USS Helena in late 2384. Captain Darwin was responsible for locating the Class M moon that a portion of the crew, including Corey Aster, opted to stay there upon Captain Theresa Faisal's revelation that she had violated Starfleet orders in attempting to rescue the USS Odyssey. (HC 2.01 - "The Minstrel Boy")

Alternate Timeline

When the original USS Excelsior fell through a temporal anomaly, it resulted an in altered history, where the Federation laid waste to the Klingon Empire in response to the assassination of the President of the United Federation of Planets. The Q, as punishment, led the [{Borg]] to the Federation who then decimated both the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, after which only a handful of ships remained.

Darwin served as the Executive Officer of the Excelsior. He helped the displaced Excelsior enter the temporal anomaly because he believed that the Excelsior would collapse the divergent timeline. After Captain Knapp was killed while resisting arrest, Darwin took command of the Excelsior and engaged in battle against the Borg. Darwin was eventually assimilated. (HF 2.02 - "Yesterday's Excelsior")

Background Information

  • Upon his marriage, the individual formerly known as "Cliff Gardner" opted to take his wife's last name and begin going by his middle name, "James", which was the name he preferred to go by. Owing to the complexities of conducting legal processes via subspace radio, the name change did not take effect until sometime in 2377.
