Encyclopedia:Canon
From Hidden Frontier
Canon refers to the Star Trek stories that are officially recognized as "true." The generally accepted definition is that If it's on the screen, it's canon. This means that all the television series and movies are canon, and all novels and fan fiction are not. The animated Star Trek, (TAS) which aired in the 1970s, is considered non-canon, except for the episode about Spock's youth, "Yesteryear."
Note that "on the screen" refers to media produced by the owners of the Star Trek franchise, Paramount Pictures Studios, and not fan-produced videos, such as Hidden Frontier.
Points of Departure from Star Trek Canon
Hidden Frontier generally conforms to established Star Trek canon, but naturally extends it with its own canon material by virtue of being an original work. It also incorporates some characters and storylines from selected published Star Trek works.
- Captain Shelby
- Elizabeth Shelby first appeared in the TNG two-part episode, "Best of Both Worlds." The character was revived in Peter David's series of novels, Star Trek: New Frontier, as the first officer of the USS Excalibur, under Captain Mackenzie Calhoun. In Hidden Frontier, Shelby's backstory includes all the canon elements from TNG, but only some of the elements from New Frontier, as well as adding personal historical elements that apply only to Hidden Frontier canon ("Epitaph").
- Robin Lefler
- Lefler first appeared as a character in TNG. The character was revived in Peter David's series of novels, Star Trek: New Frontier. In Hidden Frontier, Lefler's backstory includes all the canon elements from TNG, but only some of the elements from New Frontier, as well as adding personal historical elements that apply only to Hidden Frontier canon.
- Wesley Crusher
- Wesley Crusher, the son of the Enterprise‘s chief medical officer, Dr. Beverly Crusher, originally served as an acting ensign on the Enterprise, then attended Starfleet Academy before joining the transdimensional being known as the Traveler. He appeared briefly in Hidden Frontier in one episode, but was not heard or seen from again in the series.
- Captain Kira Nerys
- Season 6 of Hidden Frontier is set after the DS9 relaunch novel "Unity." While Hidden Frontier does not completely embrace everything in the novel as part of its canon, it is certainly accepted that by now Bajor has been formally admitted to the Federation and that the Bajoran militia has been absorbed into Starfleet – hence, Kira's uniform and rank as depicted in "Countermeasures."
- Captain Mackenzie Calhoun
- Season 6 of Hidden Frontier is set after the New Frontier novel God's Above. Hidden Frontier cannot follow New Frontier's own universe perfectly as Elizabeth Shelby already exists in a completely different role here to her New Frontier version. However, her relationship with the Xenexian, M'K'N'zie of Calhoun, and his membership in Starfleet, is represented.
