Galaxy IV-class

The Galaxy IV-class Starship
The Galaxy IV-class dreadnaught is a modification of the Galaxy III-class dreadnaught, which itself is a heavily-modified Galaxy-class explorer.
The Galaxy IV design has a number of design differences from its Galaxy-class forerunner, including:
- A detachable phaser canon mounted on the underside of the saucer section.
- A larger impulse engine mounted on the dorsal of the "neck" of the engineering hull.
- Torpedo launchers atop the saucer section, in proximity to the bridge.
The Galaxy IV differs substantially from its Galaxy III-class predecessor as well. Prominent changes include:
- The Galaxy III's third warp nacelle is replaced with a large wedge-shaped sensor module, akin to those mounted on some Nebula-class starships.
- Substantial modifications are made to the power and propulsion systems to compensate for the loss of the third nacelle.
- The torpedo launchers are moved further apart on the saucer section, addressing concerns that a "lucky hit" could cause substantial damage to the bridge.
In 2384, the USS Excelsior became the first Galaxy III-class starship to undergo this refit at Earth Station McKinley. It was intended to prepare the Excelsior for her participation in Operation Beta Shield. (Star Trek: Operation Beta Shield)
