Federation One (NCC-81000)
'Federation One' is the current designation of the transport of the President of the United Federation of Planets. The current Presidential transport is a Diplomat-class starship. Prior to the President Karah Vindenpawl's assumption of the Presidency in 2384, the Presidential transport was known as Starfleet One.
Starfleet One travelled to Starbase 395 in 2384, with then-President Se'Fron of Efros aboard. He enlisted the aid of Commodore Elizabeth Shelby of the USS Excelsior to escort him to Romulus. It was Se'Fron's intent to repair the damaged alliance amongst the Federation, the Klingon Empire and the Romulan Star Empire to secure Romulan space against further potential incursion by the Archein ("Operation Beta Shield"). Upon arriving at Romulus, he transferred to the vessel's "diplomatic module" for the trip down to the surface. During his return to orbit, while Se'Fron informed Commodore Shelby of his partial success with the Romulan Senate, the magnetic constrictors on one of the module's antimatter pods failed. This caused a catastrophic explosion - all hands aboard the module, including President Se'Fron were lost.
President Vindenpawl, during her first speech to the Federation Council, announced that she was renaming the vessel. To quote her speech, referring to recent tensions with the Romulans, "As a symbol of our commitment, of our good faith, I am renaming Starfleet One, Federation One, because while Starfleet is our military, Federation is our charter."
The diplomatic module was replaced upon the ship's return to Earth after Se'Fron's death. Lieutenant Commander Matt McCabe, Vindenpawl's Chief of Presidential Security, later retrieved the data recorder from Se'Fron's diplomatic module and found that it had been infected by a computer virus engineered by the Tal Shiar which caused the aforementioned magnetic constrictor failure.
