Overview
The Federation Merchant Service, also know as the Merchant Marine, is a civilian organisation. The Merchant Service serves in a supplementary role to Starfleet, conducting trade and transport operations, colonial support, customs duties, and planetary surveys.
Merchant Service ships and equipment are often Starfleet surplus.
