Episode Summary
Synopsis
The mysteries of the Briar Patch beckon to the crew of the USS Excelsior, under the command of Captain Ian Quincy Knapp and his new senior staff. Their first mission has them looking for an foe that Knapp already has some knowledge of, but what they will discover will shock them all.
New Assignments
It is eighteen months after the events in "Enemy Unknown, Part 1", on stardate 54121.3. Captain Knapp replaces Fleet Captain Jennifer Cole as commander of Federation starbase Deep Space 12, in orbit around the Ba'ku home world in the Briar Patch. As Cole packs up for her new assignment, she and Knapp catch up on old times and old friends, and try to second guess the motives of Starfleet. Knapp assumes that unconfirmed reports of "alien" activity might have a connection during his own incidents of the Dominion War. Knapp also feels that, due to the war, Starfleet was unable to do a through investigation, although there was not much to investigate since the mysterious ship was destroyed. Cole gives Knapp some final advice (about a cranky replicator) and they say their farewells to each other.
Introductions
We find Captain Knapp in his ready room, where we are introduced to Lieutenant Commander Jason Munoz. Captain Knapp immediately shows his disdain for another new young face on his ship. The new Executive Officer points out his qualifications while serving under Captain Willcocks while serving aboard the USS Angeles. He felt his record should speak for itself, even without the recommendation. Knapp points out that recommendation got him the opportunity, but it was up to Munoz to keep it. With that said, Knapp ordered a briefing at 0700 and instructed Munoz to get acquainted with the crew as their trust in him is more important than the Captain's.
Knapp takes upon himself to meet the last Iconian, Rayvan. Upon entering his quarters, it would appear that Rayvan is in deep concentration while lighting candles. They exchange greetings. Rayvan having reviewed the Captain's report, has some unsettling news. In the conference room, Rayvan shares his troubling news, naming the threat as the Grey Confederacy, described as a collection of genetically-engineered species run by a powerful psionic race called the Ethereals. He goes on to say that they were the mortal enemies of the Iconians and they were responsible for the destruction of the Iconian home world. Captain Knapp feels confident that they will be able to deal with the threat the Grey represent. Rayvan points out that in the time of the Iconians, they were more advanced than Starfleet is today.
Rayvan also notes that he feels the connection between the McAllister Nebula and the Grey is that the Grey's warships have a bio mechanical armor that is enhanced by the metaphasic radiation given off by the nebula, the Briar Patch itself—and the Ba'ku home world system of rings. For that reason, Knapp decides on a tactical doctrine that includes attempting to lure the Grey out of the Patch for any combat that might occur. Knapp’s orders are to first attempt negotiation with the Grey, rather than fight. Rayvan doubts how effective that will be, but agrees to help Counselor Elbrey attempt communication with the Grey and share information on the various subject races with Dr. Henglaar.
Munoz, satisfied with Engineering, departs. Lefler and Witczak talk about replacing the gel packs. Witczak then asks Lefler for a drink after they are done. She politely refuses, giving another rules not dating co-workers. Munoz encounters some familiar faces in sickbay when he meets Counselor Elbrey and Dr. Henglaar. Prior to his entrance, they discuss personnel and Elbrey's ability to read people. Henglaar boasts he must be a hard read, but Elbrey states he is quite easy and in fact is one of the most compassionate people on the ship. Munoz talks to them both and we learn that Elbrey used to teach at Starfleet Academy (where she first met Munoz as his instructor) but given her abilities as a Betazoid, she went to the front lines of the Dominion War.
After a brief status update in sickbay, Munoz makes his way to Ten Forward where he sees another familiar face, Ensign Jenna McFarland (an un-joined Trill and the Excelsior 's Chief Flight Control Officer). He is then introduced to Science Officer Ensign Ro Nevin (brother of Lieutenant Ro Laren). Munoz and McFarland catch up on old times and discuss friends from the previous ships they served together. Munoz then heads to the bridge where he meets Security Chief Lt. William Martinez, who gives him a rundown of the Excelsior's combat readiness as well as new security measures for a possible Grey attack. Next Munoz met with Communications Officer Ensign Brad Rawlins who indicated he attended the Academy with Ensigns Ro and Barrett. Last he meets Chief of Operations Ensign Andrew Barrett. Munoz remembers reading that he had some difficulties at the Academy but has since maintained a clean record.
Finally assured of the ship’s operational readiness, Munoz is summoned to Knapp’s ready room where Knapp informs him that Starfleet has ordered them to immediately investigate the loss of a colony ship with all hands near the Corinthius system.
