Episode Summary
Synopsis
It is eighteen months after the events in Enemy Unknown, Part 1, on stardate 54121.3. Captain Knapp (David Dial) replaces Fleet Captain Jennifer Cole (played by Jennifer Cole) as commander of starbase Deep Space 12, in orbit around the Ba'ku homeworld in the heart of the Briar Patch. As Fleet Captain Cole packs up for her new assignment, she and Captain Knapp catch up on old times and old friends, and try to second guess the motives of Starfleet. Knapp assumes that unconfirmed reports of "Alien" activity might have a connection during his own incidents of the war. Knapp also feels that due to the war, Starfleet was unable to do a through investigation, though there was not much to explore since the mysterious ship was destroyed. Fleet Captain gave some final advice (about a replicator) and they said their farewell to eachother.Introductions
We find Captain Knapp in his ready room, where we are introduced to Lieutenant Commander Jason Munoz (Jason Munoz). Captain immediately shows his disdain for a new young face on his ship, which the new Executive Officer points out his qualifications server under Captain Wilcox. He feels his record should speak for itself, even without the recommendation. Knapp points out that recommendation got him this chance, but it is up to Munoz to keep it. With that said, Knapp orders a briefing at 0700 and wants Munoz to get aquainted with the crew as their trust in him is more important than Captain's trust in Munoz.
Knapp takes upon himself to meet the last Iconian, Rayvan (Gregory Allen). Upon entering his quarters, it would appear that Rayvan is under deep concentration while lighting candles. They exchange greetings, and Rayvan having reviewed the Captain's report, has some unsettling news. In the conference room, Rayvan shares his troubling news of what he names the threat as the Grey Confederacy. Best describe as a collection of genetically engineered species run by a power psionic race called the Ethereals. He goes on to say that they were the mortal enemies of the Iconians and they were responsible for the distruction of the Iconian Homeworld. Captain Knapp feel confident that they will be able to deal with the threat the Grey possess, but Rayvan points out that back in the time of the Iconians, they were more advanced than Starfleet is today.
Rayvan continues to note that he feels the connection between the Nebula and the Grey is that t he Grey warship has a biomechanical armor that is further enhanced by the metaphasic radiation given off by the McAllister nebula, the Briar Patch itself—and the Ba'ku homeworld’s system of rings. For that reason, Knapp decides on a tactical doctrine that includes attempting to lure the Grey out of the Patch for combat. Nonetheless, Capt. Knapp’s orders are to negotiate with the Grey, rather than fight. Rayvan doubts how effective that will be, but agrees to help Lt. Cmdr. Elbrey (Barbara Clifford) to attempt communication with the Grey and share information on the various subject races with Lt. Cmdr. Dr. Henglaar.
Munoz satisfied with Engineering, he leaves. Lefler and Witczak talk about replacing the gel packs, which Witczak asks Lefler for a drink after they are done. She polietly refuses, giving another rules not dating co-workers. Munoz encounters some familiar faces in Sickbay when he meets Counselor Elbrey and Dr. Henglaar. Prior to his enterance, they are talking about personnel and Elbrey's ability to read people. Henglaar boasts he must be a hard read, but Elbrey states he is quite easy and in fact is one of the most compassionate people on the ship. Munoz talks to them both and we learn that Elbrey use to teach at the Academy (where she first met Munoz as his instructor) but given her abilities as a Betazed, she went to the front lines of the Dominion war.
After a brief status update in Sickbay, Munoz makes his way to Ten Foward where he sees another familiar face (Helmsman) Ensign Jenna McFarland (Adrianne Lange) (an unjoined Trill). There he is introduced to Ensign Science Officer Ro Nevin (Arthur Bosserman) (brother of Ensign Ro Laren). Munoz and McFarland catch up on old times and discuss old friends from the previous ships they served together. Munoz then heads to the Bridge where he meets Security Chief Lt. William Martinez (Anthony Diaz), who gives him a rundown of the Excelsior combat readiness as well as new security measure for possible Grey attack. Next Munoz met with Communication Ensign Brad Rawlins (Tristan Clark) who established going to the Academy with Ensign Ro and Ensign Barrett. Last he meets Chief of Operations Ensign Andrew Barrett (Tyler Bosserman). Munoz remembers reading that he had some difficulty at the Academy but has had a clean record since then.
Finally assuring of the ship’s operational readiness, Munoz is summoned to Knapp’s ready room where Knapp informs him that Starfleet has ordered them out to investigate a colony ship lost with all hands near the Corinthius system.
