The USS Devonshire
In 2375, under the command of Captain Ian Quincy Knapp, the USS Devonshire participated in the Battle of Lapolis. During the battle, a Cardassian Galor-class warship and a Dominion heavy dreadnaught managed to break away from the main battle and flee to the McAllister Nebula. The Devonshire, USS Tiananmen, and USS Rutledge pursued the vessels into the nebula. During the pursuit, the Tiananmen was destroyed by the Dominion dreadnaught with the loss of all hands. The Devonshire was temporarily disabled in the same attack.
Later, after the Devonshire had tracked the Dominion ships, which had been destroyed, they encountered a powerful alien species known as the Grey Confederacy. In order to prevent his ship falling into enemy hands and to attempt to save the lives of his crew, Knapp initiated the ship's auto-destruct sequence and ordered the ship abandoned. The Devonshire was left on a collision course with the massive Grey vessel. Just as the vessels collided, the Devonshire's auto-destruct countdown completed. The resulting explosion destroyed both the Devonshire and the pursuing Grey battleship. Most of the Devonshire's crew managed to escape on shuttlecraft and escape pods.
Captain Knapp was cleared of any wrongdoing during the routine investigation of the loss of a starship.
