History

Station Commander Jennifer Cole (2376-2377)

Starfleet, under the orders of the Federation Council, built Deep Space 12 in orbit over Ba'ku in 2376, to protect the planet from exploitation by other powers - particularly the Breen, who were in the process of installing cooling unit on the planet in order to make it more hospitable to their race; and the Tzenkethi, who were also bent on taking advantage of the healing powers the planet's metaphasic rings contained.

During the preliminary construction and completion of the station in 2376, Fleet Captain Jennifer Cole served as Station Commander. The USS Independence was assigned to the station. The USS Angeles was assigned to back up the Independence. (ANG 1.01 - "Return to Duty") Commander Joseph Johns was assigned to the station as its executive officer. Shortly after the station received a compliment of new scout vessels just before being damaged by a plasma storm. One of those scouts was used to make first contact with the entity named "Joe". (ANG 1.02 - "A Little Night Music") The station was the site of a conference about the metaphasic radiation in the rings of Ba'ku. During the conference, a rogue Breen agent kidnapped Artim Ibanya and Katie Moss in an attempt to force the Federation to accept a Breen colony on Ba'ku. The attempt failed and the officer in question was arrested. (ANG 1.03 - "Dreamers" and HF 2.06 - "To The Stars")

Station Commander Ian Knapp (2377-2378)

In 2377, Cole relinquished command to Captain Ian Knapp, when Starfleet realized that recent attack on vessels in the Patch were related to an incident that Knapp had experience with. Command assigned his new Galaxy III-class dreadnaught, the Excelsior, to the station as his flagship. (HF 1.02 - "Enemy Unknown, Part II") Towards the end of that year, a Tzenkethi vessel in range of the starbase demanded access to Ba'ku, threatening the life of Wesley Crusher, who they held as a hostage. Captain Knapp was able to get the Tzenkethi to surrender. (HF 1.06 - "Echoes")

Station Commander Alynna Nechayev (2378-2379)

In 2378, the starbase served as the sector command post, overseen by Admiral Nechayev. She took overall command of the station. The station, as well as Ba'ku, was subsequently attacked by a Grey Confederacy fleet that was eventually repelled by the 12th Fleet. (HF 2.01 - "Refugees") A successful peace accord was held on the station. Admiral Nechayev and Captain Knapp were a part of the peace process. (HF 2.02 - "Yesterday's Excelsior") Later that year, an informal tribunal was held to investigate the death a Founder who was sent to help test a psionic device developed by the Dominion to fight the Grey. The tribunal found that the Founder's death was due to "misadventure" - Captain Knapp was cleared of any wrongdoing. (HF 2.03 - "Old Wound")

A damaged Excelsior was escorted back to the station after a run in with Grey fighters. (HF 2.07 - "Fire In The Heart") The vessel returned to the station after fighting off of a Grey attack. While on patrol, Knapp took the vessel off of its usual patrol route and went to the aid of Lieutenant Luko, who was under attack in a Ju'day-class vessel. The Excelsior was heavily damaged when a number of Grey fighters rammed the vessel. The vessel was left adrift and disabled. A second attack left the Excelsior in worse shape, including the bridge which became cut off from the rest of the ship. The ship was nearly destroyed when a massive power surge threatened to overload the phaser cannon. Ensign Andrew Barrett was sent to repair the cannon because he was the fastest runner. (HF 2.07 - "Fire In The Heart")

The Excelsior returned to the station after a long patrol and an attack by a Grey warship. (HF 2.08 - "Coward's Death") A Tren'La fold-ship arrived at the station. The station was attacked by three Grey battleships. (HF 2.09 - "Worst Fears, Part 1")

Station Commander Ian Knapp (2379-2384)

In 2379, Captain Knapp used the station's auxiliary shuttles and a museum ship to ram the attacking Grey battleships. The station was saved when Knapp took a Tren'La fold-ship and trapped the battleships in a pocket fold. The Federation Fleet led by the Excelsior returned to the station. (HF 3.01 - "Worst Fears, Part 2") Knapp was promoted to Commodore and he was given command of the station, while Nechayev became the sector commander. (HF 3.02 - "Worst Fears, Part 3") The Independence went to the station for repairs. The Independence started to help with the supply runs. (HF 3.03 - "Heroes") Ambassador O'Faur of the Son'a traveled to the station to bring word of an Cardassian shipyard built at the edge of the Briar Patch. She met with Nechayev and Knapp about the Cardassians. (HF 3.05 "Modus Operandi")

Command Crew

Starfleet Task Forces

Deep Space 12 is the home port for the 12th Fleet, which includes the starships USS Excelsior, USS Saratoga, and USS Antietam. With the onset of war with the Tholian-Breen alliance, more vessels from all of Starfleet's allies were stationed there.

Facilities

Grey Research Facility

Matt McCabe and Robin Lefler uncovered the New Grey Research Facility while aboard Deep Space 12 when McCabe detected a low-power deflector field that was blocking tricorder scans in and around one of the stations Automated Maintenance Areas, affectionately referred to as The Janitor's Closet. Making a determination that is was more than just a standard safety back-up, he requested that Lefler order Lieutenant Corey Aster to scramble the field, revealing it to be a holo-generator that hid the main research area of the facility.

Admiral Nechayev became infuriated, as she was unaware of its location aboard the station. She also officially reprimanded Captain Elizabeth Shelby's unauthorized investigation that found the facility.

Commander William Martinez is in command of the Grey Research Facility. Matt McCabe, as part of Starfleet's formal response to his discovery, is assigned to facilty, but remains on board the Excelsior on detached duty for Martinez.

Promenade

Ba'ku Garden and Flower Shop

In 2379, Sha'kev used the flower shop to send flowers to Commander Robin Lefler on the Excelsior. The owner was questioned by Lieutenant Luko of the Excelsior for two hours and found out that one of Sha'Kev's associates placed the order. (HF 3.03 - "Heroes")

The Metreon Cloud

Lt. Ro Nevin (Bobby Rice) and Bajoran news reporter Tara Abis (Sarah Ball) converse on Deep Space 12's Promenade. From the episode, "Homeport."

The Metreon Cloud is a popular dining locale many Starfleet personnel enjoy. The proprietors of the establishment have installed monitors to enable their patrons to watch live broadcasts from the Federation News Service, as well as enjoy a variety of other two- and three-dimensional entertainment programs from the Federation's media archives at Memory Alpha.

Tokai's Bar and Grill

This restaurant is owned and operated by Tokai. (ANG 1.02 - "A Little Night Music")

Ba'ku Regeneration Shipyards

The station is the location of the Ba'ku Regeneration Shipyards. In 2376, the shipyard was constructing various vessels. (ANG 1.02 - "A Little Night Music") Both the Renaissance II-class USS Helena and the Allegiance-class USS Odyssey were commissioned from these shipyards.
