Away Team

An away team is a small squad of Starfleet officers that is assigned a mission-specific role while away from their assigned ship or installation. An away team, despite the implication that there be two or more personnel as members thereof, can consist of one person when circumstances require it.

Typical Away Team Composition

The typical away team normally consists of a three to six member group - a mission leader, mission specialists that have training for the particular needs of the team, and at least one junior officer or security officer.

Other Names

In Starfleet's past, away teams have also been referred to as landing parties. However, with the abandonment of wide-scale shuttle use for surveying planets in favor of the faster and more efficient transporter system, the term became antiquated.

Other names for away teams are survey team or rescue team, depending on the situation, the personnel involved, and the needs of the mission in question.
