Arthur Bosserman, an actor-singer from the Los Angeles area, originated the role of Ensign Ro Nevin, but decided to leave the cast after five seasons to pursue professional interests in music. He now performs with the Los Angeles-based group Lovehatehero.

With Arthur's departure, Hidden Frontier’s producers decided to recast the role. The reasoning behind the recasting was that Ro was a heavily developed character and vital to the series. The producers felt that, as a fan favorite, Ro could not simply be written out. From season six onward, Ro is played by Bobby Rice.
